Tell us about your role as a Partner and what you enjoy about it.
Being a partner in a small firm is a wide-ranging role, which includes business management, client relationships, compliance, business development and staffing issues. No two days are the same and I like the variety. I'm an early riser, so the early start suits me fine and I'm fortunate that I work with a great team.
What changes have you seen during your time at James Sharp?
Huge technological changes have impacted on all jobs over the past 20 years and I've found this particularly evident in the financial industry. We used to fax prices and news to clients — now they have it 'live' on their phones. Once we were tied to our office desks — now I can access the markets from anywhere in the world! Information is much more readily available, sometimes there is even too much of it! But one thing has remained constant; clients still like to talk to someone at the end of the phone for some sensible advice and assistance.
We are fortunate that we have a very loyal team and I've not seen many staff changes over the years. The team has grown steadily and that is very pleasing to me and my Partners.
Compliance has become increasingly important, especially since the financial crisis.
What is the best piece of financial advice you've ever been given?
Be patient and reinvest your dividends.
What's your favourite part of the Christmas period and why?
I like the run-up to Christmas when the lights go up and the kids get excited. Opening the Quality Street tin for the first time is always a big moment. And I love sprouts…
Name three things you can't live without.
Family, holidays (especially skiing) and my saxophones.
